Elixer of Undying

A legendary potion intended for King Corvin Braxton Wilford of the Milford Monarchy. Queen Reeny has offered a 100,000 GP reward for its return (see [[Queen’s Declaration]]).

Identification

An Identify spell reveals it to be a Potion of Longevity. One use remaining.

Properties

Base Effect (Potion of Longevity)

When you drink this potion, your physical age is reduced by 1d6 + 6 years, to a minimum of 13 years. Each time you subsequently drink a potion of longevity, there is a 10 percent cumulative chance that you instead age by 1d6 + 6 years.

Suspended in this amber liquid are a scorpion’s tail, an adder’s fang, a dead spider, and a tiny heart that, against all reason, is still beating. The ingredients vanish when the potion is opened.

Hidden Effect — Boon of Immortality

After drinking, you have a 5 percent chance to obtain the Boon of Immortality every birthday:

  • You are not aware that you have obtained this Boon
  • You will stop aging from the birthday that you succeeded on your roll
  • Mechanic: After a successful long rest where you wake up on your birthday, roll a d20. On a Natural 20, you obtain the Boon.
  • This roll cannot be re-rolled short of a Wish spell
  • Once you have succeeded, you can no longer reduce your age by any means short of a Wish spell

Boon of Immortality

You stop aging. You are immune to any effect that would age you, and you can’t die from old age.

Current Status

  • Unknown location — was taken/lost before it could be used on King Corvin
  • Queen Reeny considers it the Milford Monarchy’s birthright
  • 100,000 GP reward offered for its return

DM Notes

  • An Identify spell only reveals it as a Potion of Longevity — the Boon of Immortality mechanic is hidden
  • This was meant to make King Corvin potentially immortal — a dynasty that never ends
  • Reeny’s obsession with recovering it shows her attachment to her father and the monarchy’s legacy
  • If Nemesis has it or finds it, returning it to Reeny (now Vecna’s harbinger) would be… complicated
  • Could a villain use this to become immortal? Could a PC?
