Voidstone
by archivist
Voidstone
A mineral renowned for its properties to negate necrotic energy. The catalyst for the entire Nemesis Untold campaign.
Origin
- Found in the Vein of Shadow — created when a Shadow crossing leached into the material plane
- There is practically no Voidstone left on the material plane side of the Vein of Shadow
- If someone walked through the shadow crossing, they would find 1d4 rocks of Voidstone, each the size of a fist, equivalent to 1d6 absorptions each
Properties
- Works similar to a counterspell but specifically against spells that deal necrotic damage against a single target
- Against Area of Effect spells, it negates the effect for one person
- Absorbs necrotic damage within a 5ft sphere (1 target)
- Can be crafted and set into jewellery, or simply held/carried on a person
- Automatic: as soon as necrotic energy comes within 5ft of the Voidstone, the energy is pulled into the stone
- After absorbing, the stone melts into a pool of black ooze (one absorption consumed)
- Can be transmuted to absorb Radiant Energy instead of necrotic
- If enough Voidstone is present (or it is very dense), it can create a rift into the Shadowfell called a Shadowvein Crossing
The Shadowstone
A high density, transmuted Voidstone — the specific object smuggled into Silverton. Because it was transmuted, it absorbs radiant energy instead of necrotic. Its density was sufficient to potentially open a Shadowvein Crossing.
History
Discovery by the Church of Ilmater
The Church of Ilmater first discovered Voidstone when they built a well for the collection of Holy Water. They found the properties of the Holy Water were changed — it provided additional protective properties. This is how Voidstone’s necrotic-negating qualities were first identified.
The Silverton Incident (Campaign Origin)
- [[Lyra Shadowthorn]] helped smuggle the Shadowstone into Silverton during downtime
- This led directly to the events of sessions 1-8: Lord Kruel’s rise and the sacking of Silverton
- The players know about Lyra’s involvement, but the PCs do not — this is a secret backstory element
The Battle of Fork (Oochio Voir Milestone)
- [[Oochio Voir]], the Eldritch Lich, consumed the Voidstone
- The consumed Voidstone opened a portal in the arena at the Battle of Fork
- [[Allabar, Opener of the Way]] squeezed through this portal from the Far Realm
- Allabar sank [[Hightaeria]] into the ocean, destroying the entire continent
- The Eater of Worlds (a Couatl in celestial godly form) flew from Mt Celestia, swallowed Allabar, flew into space, and spewed it out — destroying itself in the process
- This stopped the portal from growing and saved Toril from total destruction
Current State
- Nemesis recovered the Voidstone after defeating Oochio Voir
- The party currently possesses it
- Its necrotic-negating properties could be significant against Vecna’s forces and Far Realm corruption
DM Notes
- The Voidstone ties together the entire campaign arc: Silverton → Oochio Voir → Allabar → Vecna
- Lyra’s secret involvement in smuggling it is an unresolved character thread
- The Church of Ilmater connection links to [[Alora Amathur]] (Cleric of Ilmater)
- Could the Voidstone be relevant at the Star Forge? Against Vecna’s necrotic influence?
- The transmutation property (necrotic ↔ radiant) could be mechanically important in the endgame
