Star Forge

by archivist

Star Forge

A massive mechanical forging apparatus built into the base of the volcano beneath the Fire Giants’ Hall. Not a traditional forge — a steampunk-industrial engine of giant-scale gears, chains, pulleys, lava channels, and mechanical hammer arms. The party first saw it from a lookout ~10 stories above at the end of session 33.

The tone: Mount Doom meets Fury Road. When running, the forge is deafening industrial chaos — fire giants hauling chains, hammers swinging on massive arms, lava surging through channels, steam blasting from vents, the whole volcano shaking.

Layout

  • Inside a volcano — approximately 10 levels high on the interior walls
  • The Star Forge apparatus occupies a stone island platform at the base, surrounded by a lake of lava
  • Paths/levels spiral down the interior of the volcano walls
  • Lookout point at the top (level 10) where Nemesis currently stands
  • A vertical shaft rises from the central anvil straight up through the volcano interior and out the caldera mouth to the open sky — and the Red Moon above

The Machine (Bottom to Top)

  1. The lava lake — molten fuel surrounding the forge island
  2. The machine floor — giant-scale gears, chains, pulleys, lava channels, levers, and wheels built into the stone island. Multiple operator stations.
  3. The control platform — elevated position overlooking the whole apparatus. Where [[Durrak Stoneforge]] directs operations.
  4. The anvil — a massive black iron receiving slab at the centre of the machine, directly beneath the open shaft
  5. The shaft — a vertical column of open air rising from the anvil up through the volcano interior, out the caldera, pointing at the sky (and [[Allabar]])
  6. The giant king faces — carved into the lowest interior wall directly above the lava lake, gazing down over the Star Forge like stone guardians. Mount Rushmore-scale. Ancient.

Why “Star Forge”

[[Allabar]] IS the hammer.

The open shaft above the anvil points directly at the Red Moon. When the forging reaches its final stage, Allabar sends down a meteor strike — a chunk of itself, of the Far Realm, screaming down through the caldera and striking the anvil with the force of a falling star. That’s the hammer blow that shapes the weapon. No mortal hammer could replicate it.

The Star Forge forges with stars. The mechanical hammer arms handle lesser shaping work, but the final transformative strike comes from above.

Vecna’s formula: Rod of Seven Parts + Refined Residuum + Star Forge + Allabar’s strike = Hammer That Breaks the World

How It Works

  • [[Durrak Stoneforge]] is the engineer, not the labourer. He has the schematics, the sequence, the timing. He directs operations from the control platform. He’s the brain. The fire giants are the muscle.
  • Fire giants operate the machine. They pull chains, turn massive wheels, open lava gates, position materials. Each giant has a station. The forge requires multiple operators working in coordination.
  • The ancient white dragon is the fuel system. It scoops lava from the lake with a cauldron and carries it to elevated channels that feed the forge’s heating chambers. Living bellows. Beast of burden.

Operator Stations

Station Function Lava gates Open/close channels feeding heat to the forge chambers Chain wheels Raise/lower the anvil platform to precise height Hammer arms Massive mechanical hammers on pivots for shaping work Bellows Giant-scale bellows that intensify heat Material feeds Conveyors and chutes for bringing materials to the anvil Cooling vents Release steam and gas from the forging process

Key Features

  • [[Durrak Stoneforge]] — Duergar master smith, chained at the control platform. Carries on the tradition of Durgeddin the Black (Forge of Fury). The only person alive who understands how the Star Forge works. He’s been refusing to forge — keeping the machine at idle heat but not completing the work. Nemesis were given the mission to rescue him by the [[Duergar Refugees]].
  • Ancient White Dragonfather of the two white dragon twins the party killed in session 32 at the Frost Giant Jarl. Bound by fleshy tethers emerging from the carved giant king faces, like box jellyfish tentacles ripping into its skin. Scoops lava to feed the forge. Noticed the party immediately but had zero reaction — completely broken. A beast of burden.
  • The forge was being used to heat the Rod of Seven Parts piece with Refined Residuum to forge the Hammer That Breaks the World

Visual Features

  • The carved faces of fire giant kings on the lowest interior wall — Mount Rushmore-scale, gazing down over the Star Forge. Their greatest creation.
  • Fleshy tethers emerge from the carved faces — Far Realm corruption desecrating the giants’ own monument. These tethers bind the dragon.
  • The vertical shaft above the anvil — a column of open air rising through the volcano to the sky. When aligned with the Red Moon, it glows faint crimson.
  • The machine itself — black iron, ancient stone, giant-scale engineering. Gears the size of houses. Chains thick as tree trunks.

Current State (Post-Session 34)

  • The Rod of Seven Parts is on the anvil, glowing white-gold — struck with a sound like a bell
  • The entire party (Nemesis) is on the forge island. Bridge retracted by Durrak.
  • Four portals blaze through the carved giant king faces:
    1. Avernus — Pit Fiend on the forge floor
    2. Asmodeus — Glasya (his daughter) with Asmodeus’s presence behind her
    3. Allabar/Vecna — Vecna pressing against ley line chains
    4. Kelemvor/Fugue Plane — Lyra Mildspear and Sir Whiskington the Third
  • Durrak is free to act on the control platform, ready to forge
  • The dragon is on the forge floor — broken, in pain, bound by Far Realm tethers
  • Possessed giants are above, marching — the hive network knows where the party is
  • Meteorites visible orbiting Allabar but not yet falling
  • Wawwen is on the forge island with the party
  • The forge is at idle but ready to start

The Party’s Choice

The party must decide:

  • Forge the weapon of hope — 6 operators, 5 rounds, Durrak directing. Strengthens Vecna’s chains. But enemies will attack during the forging and the meteor must fall.
  • Negotiate with Asmodeus/Glasya — Asmodeus may want leverage over Vecna, not his freedom. Can Reeny (on portal 1 with the Pit Fiend) be reached?
  • The contract path — The Grimoire of Shadows suggests the contract inside Lyra may be “a blade no forge can make.” Lyra Mildspear’s return is the key. See lore/the-contract.md.
  • Something else — Seven rules lawyers with three years of experience will think of options the DM hasn’t.
