Star Forge — The Convergence

Star Forge — The Convergence
An epic primordial steampunk forge built into a volcanic island, surrounded by a lake of churning molten lava, viewed from directly above. The island is roughly oval-shaped, approximately 12 squares wide and 10 squares tall on a square grid. The lava glows deep orange-white and encircles the entire island — the only bridge (west side) is retracted upward on massive iron pistons, leaving a gap.
The entire island IS the machine. Enormous interlocking dwarven-forged mechanisms cover every surface — giant iron gears embedded in the stone floor, thick copper pipes running between stations carrying superheated steam, iron rail tracks for ore carts, heavy chains on pulleys connecting the stations to the central anvil. The metalwork is ancient, blackened, and monumental — built for giants, not men.
At the dead centre: a colossal rectangular anvil of dark star-metal (2 squares), glowing intense white-gold. Massive iron arms and hammer rigs suspended above it on articulated crane structures. Thick chain drives radiate outward from the anvil to each station like spokes of a wheel.
Six operator stations ring the anvil, each a distinct industrial machine connected to the central anvil by heavy chain drives and steam pipes:
- LAVA GATES (south-west): Iron sluice gates over channels of molten lava, huge wheel cranks to control flow. Lava channels glow orange beneath iron grating.
- CHAIN WHEELS (north-west): A massive vertical wheel mechanism with thick iron chains — the main drive system. Largest moving parts on the island.
- HAMMER ARMS (north): Enormous articulated hammer rigs on pivot arms — heavy counterweights and gear mechanisms.
- MATERIAL FEED (north-east, closest to anvil): A complex chute and hopper system that feeds raw material to the anvil. Tracks, rollers, precision alignment rails. The most intricate station.
- COOLING VENTS (east): Banks of iron ventilation shafts with rotating fan blades and steam release valves. Clouds of white steam.
- BELLOWS (south, near control platform): Giant mechanical bellows — accordion-like iron lungs connected to the forge fire by thick riveted pipes.
South side: an elevated stone and iron control platform (3 squares wide, 2 deep) reached by riveted iron stairs. A master console of levers, wheels, and gauges overlooks the entire machine. This is the conductor's podium.
South-east of the platform: a large dragon shape tethered to the surrounding wall by organic green-tinged fleshy tendrils — alien against the industrial metal.
On the surrounding curved volcano wall (NOT on the island — across the lava): four colossal carved stone faces of ancient fire giant kings, Mount Rushmore scale, evenly spaced. Each face has a glowing portal blazing in its open mouth:
- South face: deep orange-red hellfire portal
- East face: dark red-black portal with nine faint flame points
- North face: sickly red void portal with faint glowing chain lines stretched across it
- West face: soft silver-grey portal with cool blue-white ethereal light
A narrow stone bridge (1 square wide, 12 squares long) extends from the east edge of the island across the lava to a small carved vault chamber in the east wall.
The volcano walls curve dramatically upward around the entire scene — this is deep inside a volcanic shaft. Embers, sparks, and heat distortion rise from the lava and the machine itself. Thick steam vents from joints and pipes across the island. The overall impression: an ancient, terrifying, beautiful industrial cathedral built by giants at the bottom of a volcano.
No text, no labels, no numbers. No miniatures or tokens. Just the environment.
Map Key
The Island:
- Central anvil — the Rod of Seven Parts sits here, glowing
- 6 stations in a ring — the operators stand here during the forging
- Control platform (south, elevated) — Durrak directs from here, Kaial protects him
- Dragon (south-east) — tethered, broken, Alora’s target
- Retracted bridge (west) — gap is 30 ft., no crossing without magic
The Portals (on volcano wall, across the lava):
- South face — Avernus. Pit Fiend + Reeny. Devils come from here.
- East face — Asmodeus. Glasya watches. Zodd enters round 2-3.
- North face — Vecna/Allabar. Jesse steps through during forging. Vecna visible but chained.
- West face — Kelemvor/Fugue. Lyra Mildspear + Sir Whiskington. Silver light.
The Loot Room:
- East, across a narrow lava bridge. 120 ft. from the island. Lyra’s speed run target.
Tactical Notes
- Devils from Portal 1 (south) reach the nearest stations in 2 rounds (40 ft. gap across lava? or is there a landing? DM call — the Pit Fiend has 60 ft. fly, so the Pit Fiend and flying devils cross the lava. Bearded Devils need a landing or short bridge from Portal 1 to the island edge).
- DM SOLUTION: Portal 1 is the closest to the island — only 10 ft. of lava separates it from the south island edge. Devils can jump it (10 ft. running jump, STR +3 = easy). The other portals are further away (30-50 ft. across lava), meaning only flyers or teleporters cross from those.
- Zodd (Portal 2, east) has no fly speed in humanoid form — he needs the narrow lava bridge or he transforms early to fly across. The lava bridge to the loot room runs past Portal 2. Zodd walks the lava bridge and steps onto the island from the east.
- Jesse (Portal 3, north) — DM call on how he crosses. Vecna could project him through, or there’s a narrow rock bridge from the north wall. He arrives mid-forging.
- Lyra Mildspear (Portal 4, west) — walks across when the contract activates. The silver light of the Fugue Plane creates a temporary path across the lava (divine, not physical). Beautiful and unsettling.
