Durrak Stoneforge

by archivist

Durrak Stoneforge

Duergar master smith and Artificer (Battle Smith). Follower of the work of Durgeddin the Black. Currently chained at the Star Forge inside the Fire Giants’ volcano.

Backstory

Once a prominent master smith in the Underdark, renowned among Duergar clans for crafting enchanted weapons and armour. His work found its way into the hands of the wealthy and powerful of subterranean society.

The Betrayal

  • His clan, the Stonecutters, were attacked despite an existing peace treaty
  • The attackers were not surface-dwellers but a splinter faction of another Duergar clan driven by lust for power and Underdark dominance
  • His workshop was ransacked; he was captured along with several defenders
  • In captivity, the attackers tried to exploit his smithing talents for nefarious weapons
  • Durrak refused to forge for them — endured harsher treatment but remained steadfast

Escape to the Surface

  • Escaped captors in a daring bid for freedom
  • Fled to the surface, found refuge in a hidden cave in the Sunset Mountains
  • The group became the [[Duergar Refugees]] — weary and distrustful of outsiders

Capture by Giants

  • Eventually captured by the giants and brought to the Star Forge
  • Chained and forced to work the forge — heating the Rod of Seven Parts with Refined Residuum

Personality & Motives

  • Cautious and reserved — learned to be wary of outsiders through captivity
  • Primary motive: protect his fellow refugees and prevent misuse of his craftsmanship
  • Determined to preserve his clan’s centuries of smithing tradition and knowledge
  • Seeks justice against those who betrayed the treaty and attacked the Stonecutters
  • Understands the importance of alliances — willing to collaborate with proven allies
  • Carries deep sense of honour despite surface-world prejudice against Duergar

Relationship with Nemesis

  • Initially wary when first encountered at the refugee cave
  • Nemesis established peaceful intentions and earned his trust
  • Serves as a bridge between Nemesis and the Duergar refugees
  • Building trust unlocks access to his exceptional smithing skills

Session 34 — Contact with Nemesis (Canon)

  • Lux reached the forge floor disguised as a fire giant and spoke with Durrak
  • Durrak opened a cooling vent — a blast of steam creating 30 seconds of white noise cover from the tether network
  • He explained the Two Paths: the forge can create the Hammer That Breaks the World (Vecna’s weapon) OR a weapon that strengthens the chains instead. The forge doesn’t choose. The smith chooses.
  • He needs the Rod, 6 operators at the stations, and 5 rounds of the full sequence before the star falls
  • When the herd network activated (giants marching upward toward the party), Lux’s body tried to march with them. Durrak saw his only hope walking away and pulled a lever to retract the bridge — isolating the forge island, stopping Lux’s body at the edge
  • When the party arrived and Reaghl threw the Rod onto the anvil, Durrak said: “…you actually brought it.” Then counted them: “Seven. You said six minimum.”
  • He is now on the control platform, ready to direct the forging

Current Status

  • Free to act on the control platform — no longer chained (or at least mobile enough to direct)
  • Ready to forge if the party chooses the weapon of hope
  • Nemesis has earned his trust — Lux’s words and the party’s arrival with the Rod proved their intent
  • The entire party is on the forge island with him. Bridge retracted. Four portals open.

DM Notes

  • Durrak’s moment is NOW — his entire arc (refusing to forge for evil) culminates in the forging scene
  • He is the conductor — he calls the sequence, directs the stations. If he goes down, nobody knows the timing (DC 18 INT to guess)
  • His refusal to forge for villains is core to his character — the party choosing to forge the weapon of hope is the validation of everything he endured
  • Post-forging: does he join the party? Return to the Duergar refugees? His skills are invaluable.
  • Connection to the Stonecutters clan and Underdark politics could open future arcs
