Lyra Mildspear

by archivist

Lyra Mildspear

The dead half of [[Lyra Shadowthorn]], created when the contract split her in two. Her birth name — Lyra before she became Shadowthorn, before the contract. She exists in Kelemvor’s domain as the contract’s enforcement mechanism. Formerly called “Fugue-Lyra.”

Origin — The Contract Split

When Lyra pushed herself toward the Fugue Plane (~session 31), the contract she carried triggered on its own holder. She is one of the idiots from Nemesis. The contract could not resolve the paradox of the protector being the protected, so it bisected her:

  • Lyra Shadowthorn — the living half. Body, skills, daggers. Became a Phantom Rogue because she is literally half a person, operating with one foot in the grave.
  • Lyra Mildspear — the dead half. The original girl, before Shadowthorn, before the contract. Exists in Kelemvor’s domain not as a prisoner but as the contract’s enforcement mechanism.

Neither is the original. Neither is a copy. The contract split the death from the life. Both are equally Lyra and equally incomplete. “(This is not to be undone)” — Kelemvor’s amendment means they can never be fully reunited. Unless the Rod of Seven Parts rewrites the contract.

Session 34 — Return (Canon)

  • Appeared through the fourth giant king face portal at the Star Forge
  • The portal opened onto the Fugue Plane — silence, silver-grey mist, cold
  • Stood in the doorway: whole, calm, waiting
  • [[Sir Whiskington the Third]] was present alongside her (details TBD — Jay says “hilarious”)
  • She did not speak. She simply waited.

What She Is

She is the “soul willingly given” from the Grimoire passage: “A soul willingly given, tethered to others, becoming a blade no forge can make.”

She is here because the contract called her — the dead half, drawn to the forge where divine law can be rewritten. Together with Lyra Shadowthorn, they ARE the weapon. Not something forged. Something that already exists.

What She Wants

  • She IS the contract’s enforcement mechanism. She doesn’t have a personal agenda separate from it.
  • But she’s also Lyra — the original girl, before Shadowthorn. She has feelings about being the dead half.
  • She wants to complete the contract — to become the blade no forge can make.
  • She will not fight. She is not a combatant. She is a mechanism. But she will act when the contract requires her to.

Key Dialogue

If Lyra approaches or speaks to her:

“You wrote it. He changed it. I’m what it made.”

If pressed for more:

“You told me I would be ok. I was. For a while. Then the page turned and my name was on it.”

If the contract is threatened:

“This is not to be undone.”

Connection to the Contract

See lore/the-contract.md for full mechanics.

Every time a member of Nemesis dies, the death routes through Lyra Shadowthorn (the conduit) into Kelemvor’s domain where Lyra Mildspear (the enforcement mechanism) processes it. Vecna fears this — every death he causes feeds Kelemvor and strengthens the contract.

DM Notes

  • Her appearance is the Kelemvor portal’s answer to the other three portals (Avernus, Asmodeus, Vecna)
  • She represents death’s stake in the forging — Kelemvor’s play
  • Her interaction with living Lyra could be the most emotionally complex scene of the campaign
  • Sir Whiskington the Third’s presence suggests levity alongside gravity — Jay’s style
  • If both Lyras are near the anvil when the meteor strikes, something unprecedented happens. Leave this open.
