Illithid (Mind Flayer) Tadpoles

A separate threat from the corrupted slaad tadpoles. These grow inside a host’s body.

How They Work

• Implanted inside the host, they grow in the belly/torso
• In weaker hosts (Hill Giants), the growth becomes too much — the giant explodes
• In stronger hosts (Fire Giants), they survive the growth and become possessed
• This is distinct from the slaad tadpoles which enter through the eyes

What Nemesis Has Encountered

• Hill Giants exploding from illithid tadpole growths — Nemesis witnessed this at the Hill Giant Stronghold
• Fire Giants surviving the growth and becoming possessed — these are the controlled giants in the Fire King’s Hall

Two Types of Possession in Play

DM Notes

• The party has slaad tadpoles in a jar (found at Hill Giant Stronghold)
• They may encounter illithid tadpoles in the volcano descent
• The two types working together could explain different stages of possession:
  • Illithid tadpole = body corruption (the flesh changes, extra limbs, the Abomination)
  • Slaad tadpole = mind control (the Vecna tether, the portal recall, the eye connection)
  • A giant with BOTH = the Far Realm Abomination stat block
