Session Notes

Tower of Light — A Growing Community

The tower itself seems to be getting bigger every day, reaching for the heavens. More people gather each day. From the city of Orly come hundreds of people, whose homes have been destroyed. Caldwell still misses his boy. We tell him that through the journey he was killed and murdered by what Azir eventually became. We tell him that his son can Rest In Peace. He is lost for purpose. His history as a butler proves him useful in managing the upkeep of the inside of the castle. He is named head steward. “It’s devastating, the damage he has caused. But I will do what I can to help repair the damage.”

The economy is growing around us. Reaghl wants to talk to the people who came from Orly. General Felix has come, and Reaghl wants him to help develop a training centre and barracks for local militia. Seawell looks at Guts. “I can see why you carry such a large sword. You must be compensating for something.”

Over a few weeks, the needs of the townsfolk become overwhelming. They are in need of order. We are in need of a city name. We need to consider the fact that we are going to relocate the whole tower, and need to tell people. We are becoming a centre point for all areas — Silverton, Highpoint, Orly.

Danny and Barnabus Return

One morning we come down to the mess hall to find Arawn eating breakfast with two men. It’s Barnabus Dazzlebelt and Danny. Tells us a story about how a big red horned demon showed up in the city telling us to turn the portal off. Told us it was sending the ocean into the red portal. “I went out there with a few guys and a boat, took a couple of wizards. They dispelled it, and then me and Barney here were in a boat in the middle of a whirlpool… I almost died. We were paddling for weeks, then a black muck came and woo. What a ride. Whoever made these pancakes… top notch.”

Lux’s Dome and Serril’s Arrival

Lux is building a dome to see out to other magical folk. As Lux is having conversations with previous students, he sees an almost 6 foot man with pale skin and black wavy hair. His eyes are a startling green, almost like jewels. He is dressed in rustic clothing, almost clerical. There is some formality to his clothing.

Dazzlebelt talks about the detector at Highpoint which can detect multiple types of magic, not just necromancy. Highpoint has made it illegal to—

The new man on the scene is Serril. He is in his mid twenties. “I appreciate what you’ve done here. I was in the dungeons for a while.” Kaial had saved him. “Is he around?”

Kaial walks in and he is carrying a tray of blueberry pancakes. Reaghl starts loading up. He turns to Serril. “You need to understand. If something happens organically more than once — it’s a tradition.”

Lux is annoyed by Serril, and as he turns to heal some town members, he feels as though his healing is bolstered. Kaial and Alora Amathur leave the room. Kaial checks in with Arawn before we leave: “Can you please check the third batch of pancakes. We don’t want them to burn. Two minutes on the first side, one minute on the other side.”

Arawn shrugs. “Guts, it’s up to you buddy.” Guts is later found with batter and blueberries, eating batter from the bowl.

Awakening Kaladin

Kaial, Alora Amathur, and Lux feel a booming sensation from a room in the tower. It is the room with the winged creature. In a room of absolute darkness, the creature feels as though time has slowed down. Lights begin to rotate around him, and one of them beckons to the creature. “Wake up, wake up, wake up! Where are you? Wake up?” He sees glowing hands resting down onto his chest. Kaial says to Alora Amathur, “We’ve tried everything.”

We try divine intervention but nothing happens. Kaial erupts in anger. “What is the purpose?! If love can’t pull you out, maybe anger can.” He thumps his hand on the creature. He feels an explosion in his chest, and he wakes up. As he does this, the rib cage on his chest shatters. As he wakes from the first strike he is fresh faced with red hair and blue eyes. As that fades, his features become more angular, his skin pales, the hair is faded and the eyes are more grey than blue. As he searches the room, an amulet of some description is hanging around his neck. There are stars in his eyes like Lux, but they aren’t as beautiful. “I know you…” he mumbles at Lux. Lux recognises him as an Aasimar, but not like him.

“How did you wake me?”

“I hit you really hard. I hit you as hard as I’ve ever hit anyone,” Kaial mumbles. “Do you like blueberry pancakes?”

The batter has gone. We yell at Guts to start a fourth batch.

Kaial helps the Aasimar to sit up. Alora Amathur asks for his name. “Kaladin.” Kaial chuckles.

“Danny is going to love this.”

“If I’m here, where is Azir?” Kaladin asks.

“That mother fucker is cooked. He is in a place where I need him to be,” Lux snaps.

“I don’t know who you are, but I feel like we just became friends,” says Kaladin. “Where are we?”

“Funny story. We’re in Azir’s castle. We’re in the Tower of Light.” — Kaial

Kaladin shares. “I made a deal with Azir. I would grow stronger. I agreed. Then I regretted it.”

“Yeah, I regret everything I did with that mother fucker too,” adds Lux.

Lux says in Celestial — “You’re amongst not only friends, but family.”

“Brothers,” adds Kaial in Celestial.

Kaladin looks between Kaial and Lux. “It has been a long time since I have known family.”

Kaial — “The best kind of family shares pancakes.”

Everyone is mad at Guts for eating the batter. Rolls a Nat 20. Lux looks at Kaial. “Dude, these pancakes are better than yours.” What we don’t know is that Guts has been honing his skills in the Ball of R&R. Kaial takes a bite of the pancakes. He looks at Guts. “Looks like I’m handing the apron over to you.” Kaladin is given bread and a beer. Kaladin has been working on beer with Felix and Arawn has been working on coffee. “Welcome to the family.”

Lyra is confused. “Is this the guy I tried to kill?” The group nods. “I tried to put you out of your misery.”

“That’s the kindest thing anyone has ever said to me.” Lyra shrugs.

Serril looks at Kaladin. “Are you okay?” Kaladin looks a little better, but still not great.

“Do you mind if I tag along?” asks Serril. “You seem interesting.” Lyra recognises that Serril was the light who was touching ghosts, and the ghosts would disappear. Serril was a student of Azir who apprenticed himself, infiltrating the tower. He got found out and thrown in the dungeon. He awaited his fate, but the tables turned.

“You apprenticed yourself?” asked Kaladin. “He doesn’t exactly teach arts and craft. What did you learn?”

“Not much.”

Arawn’s Disappearance and the Raven’s Warning

Alora Amathur realises that Arawn is not in the room. For the last few weeks he has been heading into the forest, and seeing Alora Amathur and Kaial in the morning. He leaves, and doesn’t return for a number of days. Work starts on the barracks, and people are getting into the flow of things. One morning we are having a batch of pancakes for breakfast. Serril attempts to find people who resonate with him. He is looking for converts to his way of being. He bribes people with Guts’ blueberry pancakes.

The coffee that Arawn has made doubles reading speed, you can memorise things for 30 days that you spend a minute reading, advantage for persuasion or insight on people you have been drinking coffee with, long rest with 6 hours sleep. The effects last for four hours.

A raven flies in through the window as we are eating breakfast. It starts hopping around and pecking at Alora Amathur. “Arawn, Arawn needs help.” It eats some of the bread. In pure Celestial — “Arawn is in trouble, do not tarry.”

Journey to Hydra Lake

We run out of the city towards the plains at the edge of the forest. Lux uses the mirror to scry Arawn. We see him running through the forest, and a sickly looking hydra that he is running faster than. Lux jumps on Vol. The lake is sickly, and he can see a dark cloud in the distance that is travelling towards the group. We see that the dark cloud is a flock of dark, raven-like birds. They seem to be looking for something. When they spot Lux, they head towards the group.

Kaladin asks Lux how the mirror works and asks where he found it. Lux explains the purpose, and that they found it in a tomb.

Serril tells Alora Amathur that if she is going to heal to keep him close. The birds are hovering above us. Alora Amathur casts Find Object on Arawn’s ring. She senses a slight detection in the distance.

We are all getting dragged on a rope, which is tied to Vol. We are flying through the air. We all start dropping to the earth (Feather Fall). There are over 5000 birds which begin to attack Vol. Lux dismisses him. The birds haven’t followed us, though they have seen us. We ask about the hydra. Arawn explains that he took on an adult dragon with a hydra, but the dragon found something bigger and was scared. We all get the feeling that we have an urgency to get rid of this creature from the lake. The adult dragon let out a scream when it died which was similar — but bigger.

We see that the pristine lake has turned to a swampy wasteland. Kiliara is the goddess of the forest who came down to Arawn and gave him a message. Arawn was drunk and is hazy on the details. Morthakar the Shadowbane was mentioned by the goddess. The Hydra was a guardian of harmony but has been corrupted from the environment. Kaladin recognises the name of the goddess, but doesn’t understand why she was talking to Arawn.

We notice that the inside of Arawn’s cloak used to have a symbol of a wolf, but is now the depths of universe and galaxies, all shimmering and moving. It’s the most beautiful thing imaginable. Kiliara mentions that the Hydra was a protector, and that the lake is actually a spring, the essence of life in this realm. There is a reason why the Hydra has never been bested. If we set forth and cleanse this spring it will be a great power that we can bring back to the land.

Arawn and Lupin lock eyes and there is a recognition there. Alora Amathur notices all of the animals that are surrounding Arawn. She sees the pixie creature from the red dragon appearing and shadowing the group. Arawn calls out at the creature riding on the red dragon. “The yonder days. Such glee. Together we’ll glee.” He gives Arawn a nod.

The lake swirls and moves through seeming sinkholes. Arawn senses a black dragon in the centre of the marsh. We notice lizard folk in the distance, all in patrol and transporting as much gold as they can. They are dropping gems and coins on the ground as they move. They find spots in the marsh where they drop into holes and eddies in the water. Arawn tells us he has learned they are moving a horde for the black dragon.

Into the Whirlpool — The Black Dragon’s Lair

We head into the whirlpool of death.

DM asks Alora Amathur to roll D100. She rolls a 001.

We wade into the water, Reaghl and Guts lead the way holding their footing. Alora Amathur feels something clamping around her leg, and a massive weight yanks and pulls her down into the water. Kaladin reaches out and grabs at her. He is also being pulled down. Guts reaches out with his propulsion arm. There is no grounding for him, and while he grabs her he is being pulled forward. Reaghl grabs at Guts, and we are all falling down through the water together.

Kaladin lays on hands (12 healing for Alora Amathur). Serril casts Beacon of Hope. Lyra and Arawn reach out and grab for the others to ensure they aren’t left behind. We feel as though we are being pulled down like we are being pulled on a chain. We can make out an edge like we are being pulled down beside a bubble.

Reaghl clambers down the group and tries to remove whatever is on Alora Amathur’s leg. He reaches down and holds the trap open and her leg escapes. We are pulled into a cave bubble, as though the water is trying to get away from something. The lizard folk are in a frenzy. “Invaders, time to feed!” Reaghl casts Hypnotic Pattern. The bubble is 200 feet high and 200 feet wide. Arawn casts bonfire. Kaladin runs one down and Lux casts Fireball. They are gone in the work of a moment.

The kobolds are whispering “the black wings unfurl.” As we approach the lair a sense of foreboding grows. Even those of us with darkvision can’t see the edge of the cavern. The echoes of our footsteps reverberate and then are lost in the cavernous darkness. The ground beneath our feet now feels hard, but loose. We are walking on coins. They are covered in a thick, tar-like filth.

Alora Amathur picks up a 1000-piece diamond. Everyone else picks up a jewel worth 1000 GP except for Reaghl who grabs a 500 GP diamond.

Battle with Morthakar

“Ah, my unsuspecting guests. You have stumbled into my humble abode. Welcome to your impending doom, where greed is rewarded with suffering.”

Reaghl scoffs. “He is a perky little fellow.”

Arawn launches an arrow at something which seems covered in shadow. The arrow has a tail and the head of the arrow burns white hot. The flare explodes into the distance and coins rattle across the room. A little more light spills out into the room. Alora Amathur casts Sacred Flame but it doesn’t create a significant effect.

Arawn takes his cloak and turns it inside out. He disappears into the darkness, but we can see the constellation of an archer where he was standing.

He takes another shot, and the arrow turns into a flaming meteorite. It blows another enormous chunk through the hoard. We see a point in the next 80 feet that has more light. It is a circular beacon but there is no way we are near the spring. There is a light coming from it however. We feel a sensation of breath and moving ground underneath our feet.

A hole opens underneath Lyra’s feet.

Round 1. The black dragon bursts out of the mountain of treasure. It sprays acid at Alora Amathur and Serril. She takes 35 damage, and so does Serril. Alora Amathur reaches out and holds 17 points of Serril’s damage.

Lyra jumps on the back of the dragon. “I was born to ride dragons.” She draws back an arrow and strikes it in the back of the head. 46 points of damage! It has a faint moment where it blinks like a shudder.

It takes a legendary action, beating its wings to shake Alora Amathur off and knock the others over. They each take 20 points of bludgeoning damage. The dragon jumps and lands on Arawn, breathing in deeply. There is a buzzing in the air as filth and bugs begin to emerge, adding to the menace in the air.

Arawn strikes with Slayer’s Prey arrow. The arrow that is a meteorite burns a tail of light into the hoard of treasure. He releases the arrow, and it strikes the back of the creature’s mouth. 73 points of damage! It shatters the teeth on one side of his mouth and continues upwards. The fire erupts at the height of the ceiling. A little sunlight pokes through and some water dribbles in, but it seems as though it is being repelled. He pulls back a second arrow, and striking out causes another 12 damage. Blood drips down the creature’s face.

Guts rages and goes reckless. He gets up and runs 15 feet towards the black dragon. As Guts rushes in the dragon lashes out with his tail, connecting with Guts. Guts lashes out with the sword, doing 16 damage. Guts uses an action surge.

Reaghl launches onto the back of the dragon. Three hits. They all hit. Total of 58 damage. Holds his bonus action. Suddenly Reaghl and Guts disappear.

Guts finds himself in a massive cavern. He has been there previously in a dream. Reaghl recognises this place from a dream. We see an adventuring party trying to escape from the room. A young Serril is trying to escape in the room.

Morthakar looks at Arawn. His face is ripped to shreds. “I’ve got no interest in killing you. I’ll leave you alive, a living testament to my power.” He reaches over and grabs Arawn’s arm, ripping his arm off of his body and eats it. He grabs his other arm and rips his forearm off and starts eating it. He starts to spread his wings out. Lyra freaks out. “Again! Everyone is dying!”

Lux can tell that the dragon is going to try and take flight. He casts Storm Sphere above it. 29 damage.

The little dragon swings its tail at Reaghl, but he blocks with his shield.

Guts swings his sword at the little dragon. 17 damage.

Serril puts another Storm Sphere above Lux’s spell. There is an enormous storm cell sitting above the dragon. Bonus action — bolt of lightning.

Kaladin smites at the dragon, hitting on his final strike. As the roof is crumbling and the water is coming through, a bolt of light streaks down towards the dragon. 21 radiant damage.

Alora Amathur casts Blade Barrier (6th level). 57 points of damage. She feels a reverberation as Ilmater’s power hits the dragon, and she feels a returning damage of 17 points.

Round 2. Lyra dashes away from the dragon. She loses her saving throw.

Arawn brings his stumps of arms up. He brings his arms together. It hurts. He tries to muster something, and he sees arms in a starry form try to reach out to the bow. He can feel it. It starts to form and then it all lets go. He taunts the dragon.

Guts does 46 damage to the smaller dragon, stabbing it through the chest.

We see adult Morthakar with weals opening up on the dragon in present time.

Reaghl strikes out three times and hits. 11, 9, 12 (32 damage) + 10, 7, 10 = 59 damage. Action surge: 20 damage + 12 damage. Reaghl takes 17 points of bludgeoning damage and is knocked prone. Guts takes 4 damage. Reaghl takes 39 points of damage.

The dragon squeezes Arawn. He takes 18 points of damage. He takes off into the air with Arawn in his claws. The dragon is battered with the Blade Barrier and Storm Sphere. 25 points of damage from the Blade Barrier.

Lux does 57 damage with Scorching Rays. 4 of the 6 smash into the dragon and a radiance gathers around the dragon. Lux then strikes it with a bolt of lightning, but misses — the lightning hits one of the magical plants.

Serril heals Alora Amathur with 33 hit points.

Kaladin throws some javelins at the dragon, but misses.

Alora Amathur reaches out and takes 6 points of Kaladin’s damage. Throws Sacred Flame at the dragon. It fails the DEX save, but chooses to save as a legendary action.

Round 3. Lyra passes through the light of the spring that Arawn opened up at the beginning of the battle. She strikes at the dragon but misses.

Arawn makes a death saving throw. He opens his eyes. A tiny little man is standing on Arawn’s chest. He says “The Arawn.” He lays his hand on Arawn’s chest and says “I don’t want you to go.” Arawn stands up.

Guts sees a little field mouse standing at the back of the scene. He gives Guts a nod. Sir Reginald Whiskington stands there with a glaive. “You have answered destiny’s call.” “Thanks Reggie! Just gotta deal with this and I’ll get right back to you.” He swings at the dragon, but Reggie has thrown Guts off of his game.

Reaghl strikes at the dragon. Two of the strikes hit the dragon. 12, 7 (19 damage). The energy sucks into the dragon, then shatters. Reaghl and Guts explode back into the cavern. Reaghl lands in zenkutsu dachi sliding backwards, while Guts lands and rolls on the ground.

Morthakar’s breastplate splits and he falls back onto the ground. Reaghl cuts the dragon’s head off, but we can’t see Arawn’s arms. He cuts into the dragon’s stomach. Alora Amathur takes 6 points of the damage for Reaghl.

Oberon’s Sacrifice — Arawn Reborn

The water coming through the cavern is now starting to drip straight into the cavern.

We shovel things into the bag of holding as we prepare to leave.

The little red dragon boy tells Arawn to sit down. “In the midst of our shared tragedy I request the fey help you.” He flares with a little energy, and the group can see it. There is an aura of light around them. Intermingled with somber tears he whispers a soft melody, and a tree grows up through the hoard. It turns into a bright flaming tree and a man with antler horns and a cloak of leaves steps out. He booms to Puck the fairy boy — “Stay thy hand. You are unaware of the consequences.”

The moment passes. We look at each other. Puck’s expression is resolute and defiant. “I know the consequences, I have seen the effects of taking my own wings. I won’t stand by.”

Oberon looks at him. “Blinded by my longing to heal I inflicted wounds I knew not.”

Puck stares. “I’ve witnessed everything. I cannot let past missteps lead to a path of anguish. You thwarted my sacrifice once. I shall not be quashed again.” King Oberon is flooded by guilt and a profound change takes place.

“My actions have caused anguish and affliction. I cannot change the past, but if I can help my own son I must.” In a voice that trembles, the king comes down and says to Arawn: “My own son, forgive me for the wounds that I have caused. The fortitude that blossoms within the shadows. I stand transformed by the shadows. Here lies the sacrifice. Puck in his resolute fealty offers solace and redemption. A beacon of hope from the encroaching shadows. My dear son you are not alone. I stand by thy side now in this encroaching shadow. You are bright Arawn, destined for grandeur.

My own son, our paths have crossed. I have observed thee from a distance. I have come to grasp the gravity of mine own errors. Puck can’t bear this alone. As recompense for my own actions and the guilt for my own action, I surrender part of my very soul to fortify this potent deed.”

He pulls a light from his own sternum and pushes the light into Arawn’s chest. As the light subsides he transforms, and begins to transform from a young man, appearing older and dismissed. Arawn feels memories that are Oberon’s, and sees a radiant woman, her beauty unparalleled, who is strong and vulnerable, whose eyes are filled with love and sadness. Oberon laid eyes on Arawn’s mother and you see how she grew from a child to a woman. He sees the tender moments between his parents despite the fact that the king was already married. Entwined in the joy are pain and regret, love that couldn’t overcome fate. Should you desire to reunite with your father and mother you can. But we are the peril. He sees his mother return to the material plane. She returned a day after she disappeared. She returned aided by Puck but they reject her as she couldn’t be their daughter. Memory after memory of her begging to return to her parents. Oberon attempts to repair her thoughts.

He falters and pivots in attempts. He decides to clear their memories altogether. Oberon places his hand on Arawn and beseeches that his memory of his mother would fade and he would find solace in the forest. Finally he sees his mother’s laugh and her vibrancy of spirit. He sees her fierce determination and the love that has transcended time and distance. He looks at Oberon and feels the weight of the sacrifices. Puck’s sacrifice completes. Hundreds of fairies materialise. They flood into his body, and as they move into where his arms used to exist, Arawn looks up to see a celestial tapestry unfolding. An astral galaxy takes shape, and space seems to drip towards him. A tiny orb of space falls to Arawn’s chest.

Space seems to be warping above Arawn. He reaches up with his moulding hands. His arms and hands start to form and he can feel them, but they look like a galaxy of stars. King Oberon stands there, humbled and transformed by his choices. He wishes for Arawn’s grace and forgiveness. He aims to shepherd him through the trials that await, and takes this moment to lock a memory of Arawn. He walks back to the tree, takes a moment to think. “Your words are important. Come with me. Together we can rule with wisdom and might. Embrace your birthright my son. What say thee.”

Arawn stands and says “My place is here” as he stands amongst his friends. “There are still things I have to accomplish.” A tear slides down Oberon’s cheek, turning into a gem as it falls to the ground. As Arawn is renewed by the magic of friendship and loss, he is told to weave his own destiny. Oberon steps through the trees and he is gone.

Cleansing the Spring

Five canaries fly into the cavern. Alora Amathur sees a golden Draco-Hydra, with an old man walking alongside. The old man seems very unphased by everything that is going on. He kicks a rock into the spring. Arawn has wispy galaxy arms. Arawn pulls his bow. The top half is golden and the bottom looks like a bottomless galaxy. Kiliara’s voice resounds: “Cleanse the spring, or I will take the gift away.”

Arawn walks over to the spring with the Draco-Hydra. He jumps in the spring with the Hydra, moving the gold out of the way. Arawn splashes in the water, and the hydra enjoys using its breath weapon in the spring. Arawn experiences a sense of strength in his arms. We all wade into the spring. Alora Amathur’s Periapt of Wound Closure melts into her body. Lyra’s grey streak disappears and she seems as young as she used to.

Kiliara looks at the old man: “Bahamut, what are you doing? I wouldn’t hang around with dragons too long. What would Tiamat say.”

“I could say the same for the lady of the forest who visits dragon’s lairs.”

Each one of the canaries is an ancient gold dragon. He makes a comment about the birthing of the demigod Draco-Hydra that this Arawn has helped to bring into existence.

Kiliara — “the birthing of the heart of this land. A good audience.” She takes a vial of water from the spring, and hands it to Alora Amathur. It is a potion of Revivify.

Serril asks if she can help Viridian come back. She responds that she will be more than happy to commune with him about that.

The dragon will protect the hoard and allow us to return. As we leave, the bubble starts to burst and a torrent of water knocks everyone around. When we come out, the point above the hoard starts to grow an enormous tree. The reflection of the lake is of the Fey Wild. Arawn has the gem that came out of Oberon. On one side he can see the lake, on the other side the Fey Wild.

The dragon does need a hoard to gain some energy to protect the realm.
