Gerard Prime — Return from the Plane of Fire
STATUS: BRAINSTORMING — NOT CANON
Jay’s voice notes from 2026-02-20. A lost NPC returns.
Who Is Gerard Prime?
- Gerard Prime — Steward of Magic on the [[Highpoint]] [[Council of Stewards]]
- Older brother of [[Chatham Prime]]
- Worked with [[Azir]] when Highpoint was under attack
- Was instrumental during the crisis when Highpoint fled to the Sword Coast after the events of Allabar’s portal destroying Hightaeria
- Lost in an explosion in the magical tower — a fireball explosion that appeared to have transported him to the Plane of Fire
- Presumed dead by Nemesis and Highpoint
The Return
How It Happens
The Star Forge is a volcano forge of immense magical intensity. The fire here is primordial — not just natural flame but the fundamental fire of creation, fed by ley line energy and an enslaved ancient dragon.
This intensity weakens the veil between the Material Plane and the Plane of Fire.
At some point during or after the Star Forge encounter:
- The party notices a shimmer in the air near the forge — like heat haze, but with depth
- Through the shimmer, they can see another place — a landscape of fire, ash, obsidian
- And in that landscape: a figure. Human. Ragged. Surviving.
Gerard Prime. Alive. In survival mode — Jay described it as “Minecraft survival mode.” He’s been living as a nomad in the Plane of Fire since the tower explosion. Building shelters from obsidian. Scavenging. Enduring.
The Key Detail
Gerard doesn’t step through on his own. The veil is thin enough to see through, maybe to communicate through — but not thin enough to cross unaided.
Someone from Nemesis has to make the decision to walk through the shimmer into the Plane of Fire and bring him back.
This creates:
- A choice moment (who goes? what are the risks?)
- A trust moment (is it really Gerard? could it be a trap?)
- A dramatic moment (stepping into another plane to save someone)
The Reunion
Gerard has been gone since before the Star Forge arc — possibly since the Hightaeria crisis. He has no idea what’s happened:
- The Rod of Seven Parts
- Vecna’s prison visible in the sky
- The party’s transformation from adventurers to cosmic-scale warriors
- Reeny’s fall
- Everything
He walks out of the fire and into a world he doesn’t recognise. But he recognises Nemesis.
Who Goes Through?
Possible candidates:
- Lux — wizard to wizard. Gerard was the head council wizard. Lux is the party’s arcane powerhouse. They’d have the most to talk about. Also: Lux is currently in a Fire Giant body, which might have fire resistance/immunity that makes the crossing safer.
- Alora — cleric. Could protect against fire damage. Would be the compassionate choice.
- Anyone with fire resistance — practical consideration for the crossing.
Gerard’s Role Going Forward
If recovered, Gerard could:
- Provide intelligence about Highpoint’s current political state
- Offer arcane knowledge (he was head council wizard)
- Know something about the Plane of Fire that’s relevant to the Star Forge
- Become an NPC ally for the Eve of Vecna arc
- Have learned something during his time in the Plane of Fire — fire elementals, efreeti, or other entities may have shared knowledge
Timing
Jay didn’t specify exactly when this happens. Options:
- During the Star Forge encounter (sessions 36-37) — the forging process supercharges the veil-thinning. Mid-combat discovery.
- After the forging — the party is exploring the forge area, finding loot (see
drafts/star-forge-loot.md), and notices the shimmer. - Session 35 or 36 — the party descends past a point where the primordial fire is intense enough to create the effect. A mid-descent discovery that adds urgency (do we stop to rescue or press on?).
Option 2 (after forging) feels cleanest — it’s a reward/discovery moment during the cooldown after the major encounter. No combat pressure, just emotional weight.
Open Questions
- How long has Gerard been in the Plane of Fire? Campaign timeline needed.
- What state is he in? Physically? Mentally? Has the Plane of Fire changed him?
- Does he have any fire-related abilities now? Long exposure to the Plane of Fire could have effects.
- Does he know anything about the Star Forge from the other side? The forge’s fire might be visible/significant from within the Plane of Fire.
Who is Azea?Confirmed: Azea = [[Azir]] (eternally imprisoned, tower re-anchored to Mt. Celestia)
