Session Notes
The Dragon Fight Continues (Round 2)
We hear the howling of wind pick up in the air, and the rumble of the elements increases. Arawn’s cape is blowing madly in the wind.
Lyra takes out her Brazier of Commanding Fire Elemental and summons the elemental. The room fogs up and the elemental strikes out at the frost giant’s face. As a bonus action, she sneaks into the cavern and hides from the dragon.
Alora Amathur casts Guiding Bolt and Sacred Flame at the girl dragon — 84 points of damage!
The dragon screams out in a slimy voice: “Father! Hear me across the storm! They butcher your blood!” She uses a breath weapon — 55 points of damage for those who didn’t save. Stalactites from the cavern ceiling start falling around us. 3 points of damage for those who saved.
Arawn hears all of this happening from around the corner. He casts Slayer’s Prey on the frost giant and shoots him with an arrow. 21 damage on the first arrow, and 26 on the second. He then ducks back around the corner to be out of sight.
The wind is starting to howl and Arawn hears a low mournful howl coming deep in the ice. From the other direction he can hear the wolves howling. They sound excited, like they are about to be on the hunt. The dragon flaps its wings and knocks over Kaial again.
Reaghl grabs a raging Guts and launches into a psionic leap towards the dragon. Guts skewers the dragon through the neck, popping his sword out the back of the neck and into the ice on the other side. Guts is now stuck, hanging off the sword in front of the dragon. Blood is pouring out onto the ground. As Reaghl drops, he tugs Guts down with him (natural 1) — Guts slips off his sword as he falls. Guts jumps back up again, but can’t pull the sword down. He remains hanging.
Lux (as the giant) picks up some rocks to throw at the frost giant. 35 bludgeoning damage. The rock smashes him in the face and shatters his horn. He looks at Lux and screams in Giant: “Mutiny, mutiny!”
The Wolves Descend on Arawn
A wolf runs down the tunnel. It sees Arawn and snaps at him. Arawn casts Protective Wings and they clasp around him and protect him from the wolf. Another wolf jumps out and takes a bite at Arawn — 11 points of piercing damage. Another wolf jumps down from the ledge in the tunnel and snaps at Arawn but misses. A fourth wolf jumps out and bites Arawn — 11 points of piercing damage.
Kaial finally stands up. “Well that escalated quickly!” He casts Shield of Faith on Alora Amathur (+2 AC). Kaial is trying to lead the charge and get to the front of the pack. He can’t quite do it, so casts Shield of Faith on Alora. Arawn hears Kaial’s voice asking where he is. Arawn responds telling him where he is, and states that he is a bit busy right now.
The Hag Appears
Coming up the corridor behind the frost giant is another giant (salad fingers looking). When she sees him on fire, she grows to giant size with a womanly figure. She has a cloak draped off her, but it’s tattered and ruined and looks disgusting. When she sees the fight she gets a look of glee. Her teeth are missing and the ones left are rotting. Then she disappears.
Round 3 — The Tide Turns
The winds start to die down as the dragon falls off the wall.
Lyra rushes to Arawn. She kills one of the wolves. Then hides. The fire elemental attacks the frost giant again (burn damage) — 34 points. Then it hits out but misses.
Alora Amathur casts Guardian of Faith against the frost giant (20 damage, 40 damage left) then Spiritual Weapon (16 damage).
Two ogres come down the corridor. Each of them takes 20 points of damage from Spirit Guardian. Two Ettins (two-headed ogres) show up at the corridor on the far wall. They are nicely dressed with a fire emblem. They seem more prepared for battle.
Arawn dashes away from the wolves (Zephyr Strike — no opportunity attacks). He strikes twice at the frost giant doing 25 points of damage.
The frost giant drops to his knees as the fire damage finishes him off. He lays on the ice, burning. Dead.
The Fire Giant Commander
As this happens, the two Ettins step out. Alora Amathur turns around, thinking that Lux was quick, but a fire giant stands right before her. His armour and sword look impressive. He looks at us all, then at Lux. In Giant, he says: “So, the little thieves return.” Then in Common: “You march with one of us at your side, parading him like a trophy. Ettins, tear them apart. Wolves, attack their flesh.” He approaches Lux to battle. He takes a big swipe at Lux — 35 points of slashing. Alora Amathur reaches out and takes 17 points of this.
The Ettins reach out to attack, but all of their attacks fail.
Guts and Reaghl attack the fire giant. Reaghl hits with each of three strikes with the blue flame on his sword. Guts hits with one of his. Reaghl saves his bonus action.
Alora Amathur’s Guardian turns to her and says: “I have done what I can!” Two more ogres arrive at the corridor behind them. A man steps in between the four ogres, and all of a sudden the damage Alora is holding explodes out — each of the four ogres receive 17 points of damage. The first two ogres fall to their knees, dead.
Five frost wolves expel air towards the fire elemental (71 points of damage, plus 6 points of water susceptibility damage). For every five feet he moves he will take one damage. The heat in the room is building. We hear the floor crack, and it feels like we are ripping the glacier apart.
Lux casts Sickening Radiance at the central group, making the members of his party safe from its effect. All of the Ettins, the ogres and wolves take on radiant damage. They start vomiting blue radiation. It starts seeping out of their skin.
Kaial runs past Alora and puts up his shield. He went to check out the path, and discovered that 6 fire giants are coming. He then hid.
Round 4 — Lyra’s Purple Worm Venom
Lyra takes a vial out of her pocket, runs up the side of the fire giant. She grabs his nostrils, jams her feet into his eyes and as the giant opens his mouth, she throws in the vial. It is a vial of purple worm blood — 45 points of damage. The purple worm poison seems to wither his mouth, and he can’t expel the vomit anymore. He is starting to choke on the solidified radioactive slime in his throat. Through his choking he says: “You think this ends me? Run thieves, run back to your burrows. The one that thieved the soul of my brethren will pay!”
The fire elemental moves towards the wolves. They all die as the fire elemental approaches them.
Alora Amathur runs to the fire giant and casts Inflict Wounds. A plague-like substance works over his body, causing him to fall to his knees before collapsing to the ground, decaying into pieces. As he falls he grabs Lux’s lapel, looks into his eyes and Lux hears the voice of Azir in his head: “Feel the power, boy.” Lux frowns. “You’ve tried this before, old man.” But there is a voice in his head that acknowledges the power.
Arawn puts Slayer’s Prey on one of the ogres. 17 damage for the first hit. 15 damage for the second. The first hit kills the first ogre, and the second one is stumbling, the bolt sticking out of his head. The stumbling ogre heads over towards Alora Amathur. The Spiritual Weapon smites him from above and kills him.
Guts and Reaghl have two Ettins left to attack. Guts swings at the first one and does 44 points of damage. Reaghl also crits on the first attack (21 damage), then bites into him again with the sword (15 damage). The third strike hits again and does 17 damage.
Lux in his fire giant body swings his sword at the Ettins. 15 damage (kills the first one) and then does 18 damage to the second one (kills it also). It’s the first time Lux has ever used a sword. He feels Azir’s voice in his head: “I cannot relate.”
The Glacier Breaks
The ice starts to shake and break. Alora Amathur slips on the ice. A gap opens up in the ice, approximately 10-15 feet. Lux, Guts and Lyra are all now on the other side of the crack. Arawn jumps to the other side of the crack as well. Alora gets to her feet.
Lyra finds a ball of rubber bands, except it is made of metal strips. It is three inches in diameter and doesn’t weigh a lot.
Alora rushes to the end of the crevasse, launching herself across as she calls Guts’ name. His prosthetic arm flies out towards her (oops, natural 1!) and shoots past her, missing entirely. Reaghl casts Telekinetic Thrust, and as they lock eyes she feels herself being pulled forward. She lands on the edge and pulls herself up. “Thanks, big guys.” She turns to Guts. “You owe me pancakes with extra syrup, buddy.” “Extra syrup it is.”
Lyra’s Heist
Lyra finds some treasures in the den while the rest of the party fights.
Round 5 — The Avalanche
The fire giants run up the tunnel towards the group. Alora casts Sacred Flame at the magic user — 15 points of damage.
The female giant reappears. She casts Cone of Cold at our group, swirling a cloud of ice through the room. Arawn fires an arrow, but it is sucked into the vortex of ice. Lux dispels it with Counterspell. Three of the fire giants use their bodies to create a wall in front of the female giant.
Reaghl casts Pulse Wave. The big guy in the middle falls into the abyss as the wave of power sucks them forward.
Lux hoists some rocks at the giants. 27 damage for the first rock. 29 bludgeoning damage on the second rock.
The ledge starts to break away. The magic user at the back shoots a beam of yellow light towards our group. It smashes into the ground, missing the group. The whole area starts to slide down the mountain. The female giant evaporates into a cloud and starts to fade away. The magic user vanishes, and then the other four disappear under the avalanche as they are driven down the mountain.
Lux realises there is a delayed blast Fireball under their feet (the yellow light the magic user sent). We all start to run. We all save.
Arawn sees us running away from the cliff edge. The remaining winter wolves head off into the distance.
Snurre Iron Belly’s Letter
We find a letter:
“General, the thieves who struck the Hill Forge still walk, and worse — they defile us by marching with one of our own stolen in flesh. You will find this false giant, drag him in chains to my feet, and see the impostor’s head struck from his shoulders. The fragment they stole must be returned to the Star Forge. Only there, beneath the blood-lit gaze of the red moon, can the work be completed. The forge waits to birth the hammer that will break the world. No mercy. No delay. Bring me the traitor’s carcass and the Rod, or burn with him in the fire you failed to tend. — Snurre Iron Belly, Fire King of the Ashen Throne”
There is also a map that takes us to the Star Forge.
